For the first time, excluding the COVID period, sales of textiles and footwear in France have decreased by 2.6% in 2023.

Refashion offers a barometer on sales of textiles and footwear to provide a neutral, factual view of recent trends in the French market. This first barometer reveals a drop in sales in 2023 compared with 2022, highlighting a change in French consumer habits.

Key facts to remember:

  • a slowdown in sales: sales of textiles and footwear fell by 2.6% in 2023, representing a reduction of 86 million new items.

  • a historic drop in footwear sales: sneakers sales are at half-mast, down 6% on 2022.

  • growth for pure players and discounters: pure players and discounters are experiencing positive growth, with increases of 19.9% and 4.1% respectively.

The publication of this first barometer underlines the importance of tracking and understanding consumer trends to better guide actions in favor of a more sustainable fashion, aimed at reducing, repairing, reusing and recycling (4R).
