Retrospective: eco-modulated products in 2023

The year 2023 marks a turning point for eco-modulation in the textile sector, with over 52 million eco-modulated products. Although this now represents just 1.60% of total market launches, this momentum highlights the first results of the actions implemented by brands to contribute to more responsible fashion.

Reminder : what are eco-modulations?

Eco-modulations are premiums applied to market launches to encourage and reward virtuous eco-design initiatives. They can also take the form of penalties.

Textile products top the eco-modulation charts

Among the product categories eligible for eco-modulation, clothing textiles dominate, with almost 46 million eco-modulated products. At the same time, more than 3 million household linen products and 2 million footwear products have been declared.

Sustainability, the most declared eco-modulation

Sustainability eco-modulation is the most declared in 2023. In fact, it represents 71% of eco-modulated quantities. This reflects a paradigm shift in product design, with particular attention paid to the quality and lifespan of textiles and footwear.

This is followed by eco-modulation certified by environmental labels, which accounts for 29% of eco-modulated products.

Environmental labels: GOTS and Oekotex in the lead

Among the environmental labels used to benefit from eco-modulation Certification by environmental labels, the GOTS label (Global Organic Textile Standard)  occupies pride of place, with 11 million labelled products, i.e. 72% of eco-modulated products. The Oekotex Made in Green label, meanwhile, concerns almost 4 million products, or 25% of declared quantities.

Eco-modulation, an under-exploited lever

Despite promising figures, volumes of eco-modulated products remain low. It is crucial to pursue initiatives and encourage brands to become more involved in eco-design of their products, to limit the environmental impact of the sector and meet growing consumer demand for products that respect the environment and their health.

Refashion and eco-modulation bonuses: support for eco-design initiatives

In a context where natural resources are running out and pollution is increasing, it is crucial to adopt more responsible practices. By integrating sustainability criteria right from the design phase, we can minimize the impact of products throughout their life cycle, while reducing waste volumes, optimizing resource use and facilitating recycling.

We support you in the development of your eco-design strategy by providing you with key information on the tests to be carried out to meet eco-modulation criteria. We reward your eco-design efforts through our bonus systems.
